Summer is near, which means fun in the water for you but not necessarily for your pet. Did you know that more than 170,000 dogs, cats and other small animals drown every year? Most people don't realize that while the majority of animals can swim, they can't necessarily get out by themselves!
Many pet owners try to protect their pet by training them to swim to the pool steps to get out of the water. This works fine in a daylight, non-threatening environment, but at night or if panicked, a dog will panic and forget it's "landmark." Animals can't see the steps for the very simple reason that they are under the water.

That is a good idea! Or maybe dogs could wear life vests. We don't have a real pool at our house, but Mama says she might get us a wading pool this summer... but luckily, it will be so shallow, we probably won't drown in it!
Hi Trixie, Lily and Sammy-Joe! Hope you are doing well. The only problem with life vests are that they can't be worn 24/7. Usually accidents happen when you least expect it or at night when it is harder to see outside. Good thought though.

Great idea I have never seen one of those. Pools can be so scary. Two Goldens shoved Bailey into their parents pool when he was younger and he has never gotten over his fear of pools/lakes, etc. I like the idea of a ramp. We were in the water when it happened and with a terrified dog, it was not easy getting him out even though we were right there with him. I can't imagine a pet that is alone and terrified.
